Grim Statistic: Dec 9, 2021

This morning I tuned in to The Addiction Podcast and listened to an informative podcast about the SAFE Project; a non-profit organization in Arlington, VA founded by Admiral James and Mary Winnefeld following the death of their son, Jonathan. SAFE addresses all aspects of addiction, including stigma, which Admiral Winnefeld calls “Public Enemy #1.”

I checked out SAFE’s website and found a grim statistic:

From April 2020 to April 2021, 100,306 Americans lost their lives to overdoses, the highest number of Americans lost to overdoses ever recorded.

A frightening and sad statistic, but I can't help thinking about the thousands out there still fighting the battle ...

It took me eight years to overcome the stigma and to tell my son David’s story of addiction by publishing The Last Stop. If addiction has touched your life, don’t be like me, reach out and learn all you can to steer through and recover from the ugly disease of addiction.
